“I Can And I Will” – Farewell to #22

on Jan 11, 2018 in AAU, Basketball, Basketball Blog, Kids,Youth, Panorama Ridge Thunder

Last month I was asked to deliver a speech I was not prepared for but truly honoured to share some of my families thoughts on how Raphael touched our lives. This is my version of the Coach’s Tribune   Thank you for being here tonight. I’d like to thank the Alcoreza family for giving me this opportunity to speak about a special young man. I’d also like to thank this loving community who have given this family the love and support during their time of grief.   This is a first for me and definitely one of the toughest document I’ve ever hard to put together. So please bear with me.   First time I saw Raphael was of course on a basketball court, Spring/Summer of 2012 to be exact. My eldest son Cameron, 12 yrs old at the time, was playing for a club team on the West End of Vancouver and was scheduled to play another boys team from Burnaby. Our family was new to the youth boys competitive basketball scene so it was an exciting time. My wife and I were Uber parents back then which meant we drove and took our boy to local games and got to watch from the sidelines. I recall seeing Raph and his Burnaby Eagles team just run my sons team out of the gym and telling my wife, I don’t think we have a very good chance against these guys 🙂 Back then … he already had the advanced skills for a boy his age and I also noticed one thing, he was always surrounded by fun-loving teammates, his brother Ian ( who I would always see shooting around during halftime or post games), his mom and his dad being there and cheering him on. Come to think of it nothing has changed since then.   A year went by, the family and I we’re at the stop light on 64th and 132nd in Surrey and there was this boy walking across our car, we all looked at each other and said, “Is that the kid from Burnaby Eagles?” we thought that was odd, what would he be doing all the way here, maybe he’s lost or something, nevertheless we didn’t get a chance to say hello. .… A few weeks after we bumped into him again at a Grade 7 Confirmation ceremony at StBernadettes. I had the guts to ask him then, “hey kid, how are you doing? Just curious are you planning to play club basketball after Grade7?” … his response “I don’t know, I have to ask my mom” don’t worry Nelson that’s what they all say! For all I know he’s probably thinking stranger danger! Again I felt, an opportunity lost.   Another year went by with my son and I enjoying first taste of high school basketball at Seaquam Secondary. We had an OK season of learning but unfortunately didn’t get invited to the big dance of the Surrey playoffs. So we decided to check out this Panorama Ridge vs Tweedsmuir Grade 8 Boys Finals and guess who we saw? Raph and his band of Thunder brothers! I’m not sure if Nelson remembers this but he was that  proud Filipino dad in the stands that night, so I decided to approach him and give him a business card and said hey I’m looking to put a team together for local tournaments I’d love for your son to run with us, maybe stop by at StBernadettes at so and so time and see what you think. I’m a risk taker in case you haven’t noticed and wasn’t going to give up … but they showed up at the first practice and I was stoked! That summer our son transferred from Seaquam to Panorama Ridge and the rest was history.   To me our families were destined to cross paths. Let me correct that, our families were destined to cross paths and connect many other families. The Alcoreza’s has introduced us to many of the families that we’ve become close to over the years such as the Burnaby South families, Panorama Ridge, Vancouver College, Seaquam, Delview, Johnston Heights, QE, Tamanawis, Holy Cross, StBernadettes, the 204 Families and ultimately any basketball family in and around this province. Thank you for this blessing!   There is a saying, “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.”   He was good on both!   He was always truthful, humble, polite, never disrespectful, empathetic towards others, and fair in his character. His abilities, competitive spirit, basketball IQ, drive and calm demeanor built his reputation as a special athlete that was admired by most.   Raph would often ask me:   – Coach, what do you think about this NBA player? We would talk about the pros and cons. – Coach, what do you think of this high school player? I would then flip the script and ask him, do you think you could play with him on the same team? … we would talk about pros and cons. – Coach, is the St.Bernadette Gym open tomorrow? I would respond with if you’re there on time …. I figured his house is literally 400 metres away from the gym, so he can’t mess this up. – Coach, can I run this...

2017 – 2018 Men’s League Week6 Results

on Nov 21, 2017 in Basketball, League, Men's Basketball, Stats

Takeaways from Week6   Game1 – was a dandy!  Back and forth affair with league leading players going at it. Both teams had firepower and size but in the end Gold managed a 3 pt victory. Balanced scoring from Gold and Carolina with their big three of Dave-Karmal-Peter did most of the damage. Watch for these two in the February playoffs [pdf-embedder url=”http://www.204customs.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/wk6-gm1.pdf”]   Game2 – Team White’s energy always a given and the 20 pt victory over Green bumped them to 2nd place in the power rankings. Francis brought the heat early, Santi, Chadley and Joseph put in the finishing touches. Without Ervin once again, Franz and Joel was left to carry the load without much help from others [pdf-embedder url=”http://www.204customs.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/wk6-gm2.pdf”]   Game3 – Royal Team might as well play 2 on 5 if Afan (40pts) and Noman (30pts) drops every night. Obviously, guys are not doing their scouting reports. Ford with a late push in the second half was not enough to get Purple a win [pdf-embedder url=”http://www.204customs.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/wk6-gm3.pdf”]...

2017 – 2018 Men’s League Week4 Results

on Nov 8, 2017 in Basketball, League, Men's Basketball, Stats

Takeaways from Week4 Team Carolina’s triple threat of Dave, Karmal and Peter was too much to handle for the Team Red and ultimately handing them their first loss of the season. Great battle of the bigs but Dave got the advantage on this run, would love to see these guys battle it out in the playoffs. Ian from Team Red was well on his way to being the high point man but Carolina adjusted well in the second half even with Rio’s 3 triples in the second half. The ‘Lemon Lime’ match up of Green vs Gold started off well but Green’s defense was no match to Gold’s youth, speed and intensity. Robert with the big first half and then MJ finished them off in the second. You would think with 5 triples from Ervin and 6 from Joel they would pull out the victory but still not enough. Again proving that this league just went a few levels above the average. Gold remains undefeated while Green, non-defeated. The White vs Grey showdown was a back and forth affair. Denni from Grey was solid all night but Richard from Team White said ‘Enuff of this’ in the second half and went on a barrage of steals, lay ups free throws … scoring 15 in the second. Gino and Chadley brought the dawgs out and played each shift to the fullest! Takeaways from Week3 Team White gets their first win of the season Low scoring affair between Grey and Gold, with Gold icing late game freethrows The defending champs lose their first game with a barrage of 3pointers from the usual suspects in Afan, Myro and Noman from team Royal Shotcharts   [pdf-embedder url=”http://www.204customs.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/wk3-gm1.pdf”] [pdf-embedder url=”http://www.204customs.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/wk3-gm2.pdf”] [pdf-embedder url=”http://www.204customs.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/wk3-gm3.pdf”]

2017 – 2018 Men’s League Week2 Results

on Oct 30, 2017 in Basketball, League, Men's Basketball, Stats

Takeaways from Week2   Short roster and foul trouble early for team Royal did not get them off to a good start Noman’s rookie debut with 17pts. Team Red is now riding high with 2-0 start with big games from Ian and Christian Carolina’s big man with a league night high of 37 most of them in the paint, gonna be a problem to all teams all year! Peter also knocked down 20 pts on the 80 – 57 victory over Green. Ervin with the early foul trouble limited Green’s ability to come back. Now Green is 0 – 2. You know that saying ‘All that glitters is not gold!” well in week3 it was! with a 33 pt blowout of Team Purple, these new youngbloods have all the firepower the league needs to pay attention to. Airon with 27 as the high man for game3 Shotcharts   [pdf-embedder url=”http://www.204customs.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/wk2-gm1.pdf”] [pdf-embedder url=”http://www.204customs.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/wk2-gm2.pdf”] [pdf-embedder url=”http://www.204customs.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/wk2-gm3.pdf”]...

2017 – 2018 Men’s League Week1 Results

on Oct 23, 2017 in Basketball, League, Men's Basketball, Stats

Takeaways from Week1 Red team started off on a good note, Pat hitting multiple 3s, Green team missing Ervin and Dexter. Grey and Carolina almost hit overtime, 0.7 secs left with a chance to take the game to overtime, Jun missed foul shots. Very conflicting styles but entertaining to watch Black and White Tuxedo game was also up and down. Black had the lead with the momentum coming late from White led by Santi Shotcharts [pdf-embedder url=”http://www.204customs.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/wk1-gm1.pdf”] [pdf-embedder url=”http://www.204customs.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/wk1-gm2.pdf”]  [pdf-embedder url=”http://www.204customs.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/wk1-gm3.pdf”]

Men’s League Winter 2016-2017 Playoffs Round 1 Results

on Mar 7, 2017 in Basketball, Basketball Blog, Events, Men's Basketball

Game1 – Black at Gold   Takeaways: Ervin put on his cape in the last two minutes and told his teammates “fellas, get on my back and I’ll take us to the promise land!”. I can tell he didn’t want to end the season. He was the only Gold player to score in the 4th with 9pts, none bigger than the 3 with 4 seconds left to take it to OT. Joel and Edward also chipped in 2 each in the extra frame to put the game out of reach Black’s season comes to an end but this was their best outing to date. Big game from Richard but it was not enough late in the game when they failed to foul in those last 4 seconds as they had multiple fouls to give [pdf-embedder url=”http://www.204customs.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/wk11-rd1playoffs.pdf”] Game2 – Green at Purple   Takeaways: This game also did not disappoint! With 1 second left, Richard from Team purple got a clean look out of a sideline inbound play but just a wide left, ball game! Green moves on to the next round and upsets Purple. Green put a lot of pressure on Purple forcing a lot of fouls. With 4 fouls, Santi still managed to drop 23. Richard’s 14 was inspirational but Green proved to be more experienced down the stretch. Even though it was chippy at the start, both teams managed to settle down and get right down to business. Bal’s big layup after a timeout was huge and Purple without any timeouts left can’t regroup. Green now gets the honour of playing Team Red, another upset looming? [pdf-embedder...

Team Standings [table id=24 /] Game1 – Purple at Carolina   Takeaways: Carolina shared the ball 9 to 1 ratio Red had more turnovers with 12 to 2 ratio game stats Game2 – Gold at Red   Takeaways: Late game buckets by the Team Red ultimately put the game away, especially Myro’s dagger 3. Team Red out-rebounded, and edged out Team Yellow with a few more three’s game stats Game3 – Green at Black   Takeaways: With both teams playing short-handed, players had to log long minutes Team Black was lucky to squeeze past Green given Macky and Bal scored 58 of the 94 pts game...

on Jan 31, 2017 in AAU, Basketball, Basketball Blog, Fundraising

Please join our families and friends in raising funds for a group of hard working, talented young men wishing to play high level basketball. Our program is for boys ages, 15-17 years old and we are seeking funds to help our teams cover costs for: Tournaments (both local and outside of BC) Team Gear and Equipment Gym rental fees and insurances Travel (flights, car rentals and hotel stays) What started as a volunteer coaching duty for a local elementary school, grew as a passion in teaching young players more than just basketball skills at the high school as well as club level. We are very proud on the competitive teams and culture that we’ve built in the last four years and it takes a village to make it work. Men’s League Winter 2016-2017 Week7 Results

on Jan 29, 2017 in Basketball, Basketball Blog, Events, Men's Basketball

Team Standings [table id=24 /] Game1 – Black at Red (“Hamza Heat Edition”)   Takeaways: Hamza came out blasting this game hitting 9 of 20 beyond the arc. He finished with 35 and Black could not stop him and his partner Afan with his own 27. Myro struggled but Kanav was mugging players all night with 6 steals Even with Ian and Mike scoring 14, Christian and crew could not overcome the barrage of 3s game stats Game2 – Purple at Green (“Don’t Mess with the Ref-Roland Edition”)   Takeaways: Relatively easy night for the Purple squad with the automatic default win as once again Green continued to struggle with their roster. Who steps in, Roland decides to lace it up and show some of the youngbloodz how to score 28! 6 for 12 beyond the arc and 5 for 9 inside. I’ll bet someone will pic this ref up on their squad next season. Arvin was Picasso all night with his paintbrush finishes in the paint all night and dropping 23 in the losing effort. Marcus, Santi and Robin did not take the game lightly and continued with their attack scoring at least 20pts each. game stats Game3 – Gold at Carolina (“Ervin-Effect Edition”)   Takeaways: Carolina was coasting until Ervin showed up! Gold had a balanced attack with huge contributions from Bob’s 11 and Edward’s 12. Carolina relied on Kevin, Alejandro and Allan all night. With full court press in place, a late come back was spoiled with a big three from Marwin. game...

on Jan 29, 2017 in Basketball, Basketball Blog, Events, Men's Basketball

Team Standings [table id=24 /] Game1 – Carolina at Black   Takeaways: Welcome back Alejandro! … dropping 10 fresh from his vacation. Odd stat, Black team out-rebounded Carolina on the offensive boards 12-2 and still loses game. Overall the difference was on the charity stripes with Carolina making 15 of 20 game stats Game2 – Green at Red (“Trade Edition”)   Takeaways: A first for the league, with only four players on Green, Red gave up Afan combined with two other guests and allowed the game to count. Those guests combined for 43 of the 70 points scored hence the victory Myro went bananas with his 25 for the Red team but it was clear they needed their MVP Afan as they couldn’t pull out the victory, staining their perfect record With 14 steals and 15 more points inside the arc, Green was able to pull out the win game stats Game3 – Gold at Purple (“Santi-Tekounmpo Edition”)   Takeaways: Another close game between this LA LA Land matchup! It was back and forth with these two squads and it was enjoyable to watch Marwin extending his range hitting 2 3’s while Murphy was ‘Sherwin-Williams’ all night ….. doing all his work in the paint dropping 15. Santi-Tekounmpo put his team on his back and delivered but the unsung hero late was Joseph hitting 6 for 6 on the free throw line ultimately making the game out of reach for Gold game...

Men’s League Winter 2016-2017 Week5 Results

on Jan 14, 2017 in Basketball Blog, Events, Fall Ball, Men's Basketball

Team Standings [table id=24 /] Game1 – Black at Green (“Father and Son Edition”)   Takeaways: Not often do you see a father and son competing against each other. Soundbites from Rio before his game with Macky, “No Mercy!” He wasn’t lying because Team Black finally gets their first win of the season! On the expense of a Pat injury though 🙁 Get well with that ankle sprain Pat! I think Richard, Rick and Mike were the difference makers with Ian breaking out with 18 points. Good team effort on this night so it paid off. game stats Game2 – Carolina at Purple (“Old Bloodz vs Young Bloodz Edition”)   Takeaways: Another OT thriller for the Purple squad but this time losing out on the veteran Carolina team. A little biased you may say but this was an up and down game with multiple lead changes. The Kevin and Dee show kept Carolina close and ultimately winning in OT. Chris A hit a big left corner three to hush the naysayers and Dee had the block of the year! He must have had R. Kelly’s “I believe I can fly” track on heavy rotation. Charlie pulled out a flu game performance with his 11 pts. Carolina was huffin and puffin without Allan and Alejandro for sure. Team Purple was happy to get Richard back and he was gang-busters all night dropping shots from midrange to 3 pointers to drives to the hoop. Complete game but just fell short. The bucket exchange leading up to overtime was bananas. Santi attacked the paint with his 12. Jose continues to hit big late game shots and also put the lock down on Charles on the last play forcing overtime. game stats Game3 – Red at Gold (“Chef Afan with the shot boi!”)   Takeaways: Highest score in a game, in the history of the league was posted on this night! Give it up for Afan for dropping 48 on the Gold squad that I thought had a chance to finally give this team their first lost Ervin was dropping cross overs left and right, while the Murphy-Joel connection converted on multiple 3pointers Red team continues to set the shooting bar high, you must pick them up at half court because you never know they might pull up on you at half. Myro was cold for the night but that didn’t matter because someone needed to hose down the office of Saleem-Saddique because it was on fire! Afan hit 10 3s while Hamza finished with 5.  Kanav’s best game so far with high efficiency of going 6 for 9 Don’t be shocked, but the game is evolving …. Team Red went 16 for 57 3 pointers. Yes that’s 57 attempted 3 pointers, 3ball is the new dunk! game stats This is what it feels like when you’re playing this Red...

on Dec 31, 2016 in Basketball, Basketball Blog, Events, Fall Ball, Men's Basketball

Team Standings [table id=24 /] Game1 – Purple at Black   Takeaways:   ‘Battle of the Winless’ went down as one of the best games of the season needing two overtimes to get a decision. Jose with a big left corner three to take it to first overtime and ‘Santi’ Claus delivered the presents for the black team in the second overtime with a huge 3 of his own, ballgame! If you had 6 more turnovers and did not protect the boards from 15 offensive big ones then there’s a good chance you might loose. Team black hopes 2017 will be a whole different story game stats Game2 – Red at Carolina   Takeaways:   ‘Battle of the Undefeated’ went down as a classic with Carolina getting a chance to tie late in the game but fell short with some questionable calls 🙂 Red went 19 for 37 in 3-pointers, apparently Carolina didn’t get the memo that these are a group of snipers, with Myro and Hamza leading the attack. Afan was somewhat contained with his below average 18pts Rd 2 of round robin should be awesome! With Carolina missing a couple of key pieces in Dee and Alejandro, they still managed to keep this game close. Kevin finished with 25 while Charles finished with 16 Red was so efficient that they took 11 less shots than the opponent and still took got the victory, team to beat for sure as they remain perfect for the season! game stats Game3 – Green at Gold   Takeaways:   Hats  off the the green team as this proved to be the upset of the night! Considering they didn’t have their big man in Carlo, Nowell stepped up with 12 boards to help out the squad. Ford continues his super efficient performance shooting 9-for-13, nearly 70%. Bal lit it up with his 5 3-pointers Ervin “Tim Hortons” Campbell did his usual damage, with double-doubles! 22 pts, 17 boards and 7 assists ….. I have no doubt he will get the triple dip before the season is over. Keep in mind Dexter and Marwin was not dressed for this game and gold really needs Bob back from that ankle injury but Alvin Sr. played a huge part in this game with his 12 pts game summary is almost even across the board but green hitting more 3’s I think was the difference game...

Men’s League Winter 2016-2017 Week3 Results

on Dec 17, 2016 in Basketball, Basketball Blog, Events, Fall Ball, Men's Basketball

Game1 – Black at Gold Takeaways: Rio stepped up for team black this week scoring 12 on 4 3 pointers, still not enough with Christian’s 20 to get them their first win for the season Big night for Alvin Jr. scoring 19 for team gold having a super efficient game going 8 for 11 inside the arc Murphy chipped in with 10, while Ervin did his usual with 17 and monster 19 on the boards looking at the side by side, the black team’s loss could be caused by having more turnovers game stats   Game2 – Purple at Red Takeaways: Purple squad is also quickly realizing this league is no joke as they too are facing an 0 and 3 start. Lots of fouls committed got the Red team in early bonus The Red ‘Huskies’ of North Delta continued to howl with their main scorers in Afan (28), Hamza (22) and Kanav (16). Can they go 4-0 in week4? This is what you call a ‘volume’ game, between the two teams … 45 shots converted out of 123! Whoa, good thing we don’t have a shot clock in this league game stats     Game3 – Carolina at Green Takeaways: Give the game ball to Carlo for team green in week3, 7 for 8 in the field finishing with 14pts. Louie finally came and dropped 8 pts for his first game with the squad Give the game ball to James for team carolina, James went off with 24 pts going 7 for 15 beyond the arc. Even with a depleted roster, all players scored that night and found a way to win, together. They remain 3 and 0. game...

Men’s League Winter 2016-2017 Week2 Results

on Dec 17, 2016 in Basketball, Basketball Blog, Events, Fall Ball, Men's Basketball

Game1 – Red at Black Takeaways Afan decided to top week1 scoring by going 9 for 15 beyond the arc finishing with 36, teammate Hamza and Kanav combined for 23 to help with the victory Christian continues to carry most of the scoring for team black with 32 and they continue to struggle with balanced scoring game stats   Game2 – Carolina at Gold Takeaways Dee is the top scorer for team Carolina on week2 but a well balanced attack once again with 4 guys almost in the double digits Ervin’s 19 and Marwin’s 10 helped rally team Gold for a late run but fell short to Carolina. Did not help when Joel went 0 for 9 beyond the arc. game stats     Game3 – Green at Purple Takeaways The trio of Bal (13), Ford (13) and Macky (12) took care of business against the youngbloodz The trio of Jose (12), Santi (12) and Richard (14) did not get enough help for the rest of the squad, now they find themselves 0 and 2 to start the season game...

Welcome back ballers! It’s good to be back on the court for this years Men’s League. Very happy to have added two more young squads to the league this year. Sorry no shot charts collected for week1     Game1 – Purple at Gold Takeaways Joel’s first game in the league, he drops 27 pts shooting 60% on 6 for 10 3’s Bob with the 11 helpers Ervin watched from the backseat with 8pts but cleaned up on the boards with 13 William and Richard tagged team combining for 21 for Purple and didn’t really get much help from the rest of the crew. All good fellas 1st week game stats       Game2 – Black at Carolina Takeaways Big Christian and Ian duo combined for 27 Kevin went off with 20 while Dee, Alejandro and Charles balanced out the attack game stats     Game3 – Red at Green Takeaways 8 3 balls to start the season for Afan, and he was the high scorer for the night with 33 total pts Hamza was not far behind with his own 6 long balls finishing with 29 for the night Macky was too hot to handle with his 21 while Nowell and Ford combined for 32 game...

The 2016 Basketball BC U15 Gold Division Experience

on Jun 7, 2016 in AAU, Basketball, Basketball Blog, Kids,Youth, Tournaments

Coaching two teams this past weekend was exhausting! 10 games in 3 days was epic but the boys came out to compete even having very little practice times prior. Way to go youngbloods! Congratulations on winning Bronze in the U15 Boys Gold Division hopefully we can go for gold next year! Boxscores: U14 vs U15 Vancity Black: 56 – 49 Loss U14 vs MacHoops: 34 – 30 Win U14 vs Chilliwack: 63 – 15 Win U14 vs DIPP Kelowna: 43 – 37 Loss U14 vs Vancity Black: 50 – 41 Win Takeaways: when we’re aggressive with the ball, good things happen continue to struggle with press breaks, I will have to include more plays in our cookbook slow and steady wins the race, sometimes we do a better job on zone defense as opposed to man, work in progress shooting with confidence was on display physicality was good isolation plays were good rebounding is getting better triangle on the zone was excellent I thought I’ve noticed some players having issues with conditioning     3 and 2 record at this weekend’s #basketballbcclubchampionships for the U15 Gold division gets you the bronze fellas! The 2016 Basketball BC U17 Elite Experience

on Jun 6, 2016 in AAU, Basketball, Basketball Blog, Kids,Youth, Tournaments

Don’t be fooled by the results from this tournament. The #16usummersquad took their talents one division higher and had their work cut out for them in having to compete with some of the best 17U teams of All Star talents from the lower mainland. 3 games out of the 5 being decided by 2 points proves we stayed close and had our chances late in games.. Boxscores: 16U vs Outlaws (Abbotsford): 50 – 48 Loss 16U vs Vancouver Basketball Academy: 79 – 56 Loss 16U vs Vancity U16 Selects Pt1: 58 – 56 Loss 16U vs Vancity U16 Selects Pt2: 74 – 57 Loss 16U vs Outlaws (Abbotsford): 48 – 46 Loss Takeaways: Not running back on defense will have impact on your playing time. It affects the team’s ability to get back in transition and not an inspiration to others You never know when you’ll be given a chance with this deep roster, but when you do how will you respond? Bigs shying away from contact Need improvement from bigs on ability to pass out of the paint, but seen some nifty big-to-big passing … keep that up Need to call screens on our teammates getting picked HERO ball may work in other courts or leagues, but our philosophies don’t allow this if you want to play structured and disciplined ball Play execution on newly introduced SLOB plays was on point Triangle zone offense proved to be the only one out of our zone playbook to work. We need to get better on other zone looks. Learning to adjust on consecutive plays, if a shooter has hit a corner 3ball twice, don’t let him hit the 3rd, 4th or 5th. Fake a pass to make a pass     3 games decided by 2 points in the #basketballbcclubchampionships U17 Division1 this weekend proves you belong fellas. 204 Men’s Basketball – Fall 2015 Week#7 Results

on Dec 13, 2015 in Men's Basketball

The tables are set for your ‘Road to the Finals’ matchups Playing for 3rd and 4th – Blue vs Black, tipoff at 8:15pm Playing for 1st and 2nd – Grey vs Red, tipoff at 9:15pm Here’s what went down on Week#7 Takeaways: Ian and Christian Apanay your usual suspects for Red with 20 and 14 respectively. Even though Jass, Mark and Ford in double digit scoring they still couldn’t stop the Red Army. Difference definitely from the free throw line with Red making 17 to Blue’s 7. Red gets the match up they want for a third time to get a win against the Grey squad. Grey definitely turned up the defense come playoff time by shutting down Bal to 2pts. They also had a well-balanced attack with the return of Kit and Rondo’s all around game of rebounds, scoring and steals. Ryan and Allan had an efficient night shooting with 61% and 72%. 204 Men’s Basketball – Fall 2015 Week#6 Results

on Dec 4, 2015 in Men's Basketball

A buzzer beater to kick off the night! Takeaways: 1-pt victory for the Red squad, on a shot fake 3 pointer by Pat with 8 seconds left on the clock …… we call that Ice! Blue had the early lead and the return of Jass seemed like it was headed for a great ending, only to see their lead disappear. Way to ruin it for James’ MVP night with his 17 point performance! Allowing Ian and Christian Apanay on Red squad score 47 together and get out-rebounded by 20 is not a good thing for any team. You must respect every player in this league otherwise they will make you pay just like Pat did. I’d say Black team is peaking at the right time, when 4 guys score in double digits … you’re in trouble. Alejandro, Bal, Gil and Matthew went gangbusters on Grey. Missing Kit’s contributions for the Grey team became evident this game, Black squad just outplayed Grey and hit some big shots late in the game. It doesn’t help when you have 7 more turnovers and double the amount of fouls. 204 Men’s Basketball – Fall 2015 Week#5 Results

on Dec 4, 2015 in Men's Basketball

Teams ‘TAKE FLIGHT’ in Week#5   Takeaways: Michael from the Grey squad was firing on all cylinders with his 23 pts Joshua and Ford, the only Blue players in double digits with 10 and 11 respectively Grey team pulled out victory by out-rebounding and making free throws, this was the difference in the game Black team’s 3-ball threat and players that can finish in the paint will get them far in this league. Alejandro, Gil and Bal gives you a barrage of 3-pt and midrange shots while Matthew and Earl punish you in the paint. Bal, highlight night with 23pts Black’s effort was still not enough with Richard’s best game with 15 for the Red squad. Not to mention Rick’s 3 trifectas! Red team was just more efficient with their shooting and capitalized on free throw percentage See you all on Week#6   Boxscores and Shotcharts:  Game1: Blue vs Grey click here for download [pdf-embedder url=”http://www.204customs.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/204MensBasketball-Fall2015-Wk5Gm1.pdf”] Game2: Black vs Red click here for download [pdf-embedder url=”http://www.204customs.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/204MensBasketball-Fall2015-Wk5Gm2.pdf”]...

204 Men’s Basketball – Fall 2015 Week#4 Results

on Nov 17, 2015 in Men's Basketball

Week 4 was a dandy giving us two overtime games! Takeaways: Attention Black team: Scouting report on Harp is simple, guard the 3-ball. Looked like black team was close to getting their 2nd win but big 3s in the second half crushed that chance. Efficient once again with 6 for 10 shooting, with 4 out of 8 beyond the arc. Ford impressive with his own double double stat line of 18 pts, and 15 rebs, with 8 of those points coming from the free throw line. While Joshua went for volume with 7 out of 19 he still managed to bring the intensity. Rogelio with 3 steals for the night. Black and Blue went back and forth in game1 ….. Alejandro doing the double-dip with 20 pts and 11 rebounds. Those 20 pts came from 9 of 11 shooting. Dexter’s best game so far for the Blacks with 8 pts on the night. Gil and Nowell combined for 2 for 19 on the floor, this doesn’t happen often. Grey team needs to cancel their membership from the DeAndre Jordan school of free throws because they stunk up the gym! A lot of missed freebies on the charity stripe late in the game that could have prevented overtime. My name is Christian Apanay, you cannot post me, you cannot defend me, you cannot foul me, you can’t overplay me …….. and yeah you can’t guard my 3pt shot either! Can somebody please figure out this phenomenon! Thanks for dropping 24 pts on us, I was just joking when I said you only scored 19 on week3 🙂 Ian contributed with 21 pts and he was crossing up guys all night Allan’s best night so far with 13 pts. Welcome back Mike, out of the slump he scores 20 and 6 rebs Rock with two big threes in the second half Word of the night: Meta Ford Peace, EarlBron James See you all on Week#5   Reminders: I know some of y’all get excited over the stats and such but please refrain from checking in with the scorekeeping team to allow them to do their job as efficient as possible. Absolutely, no disruption of the scorekeepers during games, in between timeouts, in between game warm ups. They are constantly making sure that scores and stats match up so if you’re interested in checking how well or how bad you did that night, please wait till the night is over or till the blog post happens. The way I see it, you wouldn’t want these guys to be distracted and miss out on a point or a stat from your team would you? Also, St. B is not a big gym so please make sure they have clear line of sight with the game action as well as the referees so they can document proper fouls and stat. Week 3 proved to be another close one with victories from the Black and Blue Takeaways: The return of Joshua was the difference with Blue’s victory. With 17 pts, he was able to cover a lot of real estate and scored buckets from multiple spots on the floor. TJ and James also in double digits to balance out the attack. Black squad struggled behind Ryan’s 19 who had a chance late in the game to tie. The defending champs now have their backs against the wall with the announcement of Kit’s fractured finger injury, out for the season! The return of Ian added 10 pts for the night but Christian Apanay logged less than his average with 19. Still a great output but they could not sustain Black’s hustle. Welcome back Alejandro! Just like Joshua, his fresh legs and youth was the difference to this already hustle-and-flow offense. It was him, Earl and Gil that scored double digits for the night and was very efficient on the floor. Don’t sleep on this team as they have the long ball and NBA-like 3-pt percentages of 42% Gil and 38% Bal See you all on Week#4 Boxscores and Shotcharts:  Game1: Grey vs Blue click here for download [pdf-embedder url=”http://www.204customs.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/204MensBasketball-Fall2015-Wk3Gm1.pdf”] Game2: Red vs Black click here for download [pdf-embedder url=”http://www.204customs.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/204MensBasketball-Fall2015-Wk3Gm2.pdf”] Upcoming...

204 Men’s Basketball – Fall 2015 Week#2 Results

on Nov 8, 2015 in Basketball Blog, Men's Basketball

Week 2 brought us some exciting games once again. Close game between Red and Blue squads, while the defending champs had 11 deep on game night.   Takeaways: Players of the week goes to Christian Apanay and Kit with 30 and 24 respectively Red team needs more production from Richard and the rest of the squad to help out the reigning league MVP Jass’ first game for the Blue was a solid output with 15 , and Mark B’s monster 20 boards kept the team close. Ford and James also had their best games with 11 each. I think overall well balanced just not enough to get the victory over points in the paint from Red team. Black’s attack with Gil, Bal and Matthew fell short as well with Grey’s full squad of 11 on Monday night. Earl had an off night and that had an impact but I think bringing in Alejandro should add more firepower to the black attack on week 3. Kit for the Grey team single handedly controlled the tempo of this game and Mr. Consistency delivers yet again. 204 Men’s Basketball – Fall 2015 Opening Night

on Oct 26, 2015 in Basketball Blog, Men's Basketball

NBA 2015 – 2016 season is upon us, that means 204 Men’s Fall Ball is too! Must be opening night for 204 Customs Mens Basketball League for Fall 2015. Good luck to all teams and remember to #getyourstretchon #familytime #204customs #204mensbasketball A photo posted by 204customs (@204customs) on Oct 21, 2015 at 2:29am PDT Thanks to all who came out and represented their teams on Monday’s opening night. Here are some of the takeaways: Takeaways: first game with Blue and Black showcased both team’s abilities to shoot the ball. Harp is proving to be the ringer of the year. Welcome back James! second game had Mike and Christian going head to head …. remember both were previous League MVPs! Christian opens the season just like he left it, scoring buckets! 30 pts on the stat sheet is not a bad way to start. Don’t really have an award for Defensive Player of the League but TJ has it won by sacrificing his body on opening night. Injury update: TJ (elbow) and Metta “Ford” Peace  (shoulder) got banged up on opening night so we await to see if they’re a scratch for week2. James Har”Dean” was held scoreless so looking for him to bounce back. The draft never lies! Overall, any of the teams can win on any given night in this well balanced league. No easy path to greatness as they say. on May 4, 2015 in AAU

Another fantastic outing with the U13 boys at the SFU Burke Tournament. Thanks to all the players and families who came out and showed support. Takeaways: Lawrence’s speed and ability to weave through the defense was good to see Sam’s ability to get to the foul line and his aggressiveness in attacking the hoop is paying off Seth’ s dominance on both sides of the boards is fun to watch Jarl’s ‘gamer’ shooting ability is what we call the silent assassin Alden’s long ball is nothing but splash Kevin, 1 travel and 1 3-second call this weekend is what I call an improvement! Juelian, welcome back! This team shares the ball Communication getting better Execution getting better Congrats on the 3rd place finish gentlemen! See you on the next one! Takeaways: nerves got the best of them early but never got discouraged and kept battling under pressure ending with a 2 and 2 record and placing 9th out of a tough 15-team pool they have become closer as a group with this weekend with Lawrence as the ‘glue guy’ Kevin’s battle wounds with the bitten tongue, scratched neck displayed toughness and seeing things through The 1-2 punch of Seth and Kevin on the boards was great to see and the low post execution is showing signs of evolution The shooting range our shooters displayed will allow me to be creative with shooting drills the kids’ IQs are constantly getting better …. they react to coaches directions very well, they are communicating with each other strengths in our rebounding, shooting and zone defense in promising our passing, offensive execution and man-to-man defense will be work in progress imagine what the ceiling will be with more games and exhibitions, now the boys are ballin’! Grade 9 Boys Basketball – 2015 Surrey Champions

on Feb 11, 2015 in Panorama Ridge Thunder

Save the best game for last as they say. A perfect 10-0 record in their district for the Grade 9 Boys Thunder team to capture their first Surrey Championship banner. All the hard work has paid off and it’s just the beginning. Congrats on a convincing 68 – 38 victory over last years Champions! Good Luck in the Fraser Valleys!   Takeaways: biggest difference I saw, “TRUST” …. the ball was never sticky and it moved around, sooner and often. Play for each other and help the helper. aggressive point guard play put a lot of pressure on their defense and good things happen ….. “penetration is the key”  inside and outside game was on point intense defense sustained, 1st 24-11 us, 2nd 39-19 us, 3rd 56-28 us, 4th 68-38 for the finish. No taking foot off the gas pedal PR shot 28 for 55 (51%) vs Semi’s 14 for 55 (25%) ……. consistency came at a great time we controlled the tempo all the way through, from beginning to end ….. no slow start we only fouled when we needed to, limited them to 4 out of 6 on the charity stripes ….. compare that to our 9 out of 15 it’s good to have that taste of winning in your mouth, now you have to continue to be hungry for that taste Check out the box scores and game reel! PR vs Semiahmoo

on Jan 29, 2015 in Panorama Ridge Thunder

#1 and #2 meetup in league play and it did not disappoint. Very up and down game with PR getting the lead most of the game but the Totems managed to always catch up. In the end, the outside shooting kept the team in the lead considering how many easy lay-ups the team missed. PR wins, 54 – 46. Takeaways: slow on rotation for help defense, which leads to fouls lots of fouls kept a good free-throw shooting Totems team in the game ……. fouls tend to occur when you’re tired and lazy on defense why aren’t the guards bringing the ball up? …. we’re slow to progress, we never advance the ball, I see guys getting looked off and we never force speed as an advantage we gotta squeeze those outlet passes and have better grip on the ball lack of communication, don’t hear the team yapping about anything finish, finish, finish never make a pass with your back in the other direction, it will get stolen ….. we need our guards to have better confidence on handling the rock and not feel we have to pass it off. They’ve gotta set the tone and get everyone to their spots to allow for the offense to start 7 3-pointers was needed to beat that team, we need to have inside and outside game lack of post presence and defense in the paint will be an achilles heel ‘make them fear what you can become’ [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H10A3D66Zqo’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAyw8vlD1oU’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwRkTJe7jmg’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgtLDgkdilc’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKnr9t_l7jA’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX36-Mu9Rro’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fWCGUN0AlA’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAOx2kiTcNU’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoQUcSYn1Xk’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElkL_jR50iI’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlQD8RFuCxs’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USDyzkLbTaE’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwDaSEYBVvY’]  ...

PR vs Heritage Woods

on Jan 10, 2015 in Panorama Ridge Thunder

Back to back games for the Robert Bateman tournament matches the Thunder team with a solid Junior team from Heritage Woods. The Thunder team pulled out a 62 – 61 thriller in overtime! Takeaways: Monitor the fouls Can’t have a slow start and play from behind 2nd OT in 2 days will have an effect on conditioning rebounding, rebounding, rebounding the press looked good on a number of occasions but noticeably slower at the end of games because players are tired simple concepts on defense, “defend before the ball gets there, not when the ball gets there!“ playing aggressive gets you opportunities on the free throw line early but you still gotta knock them down the stretch [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=To_iiMLkbCY&feature=youtu.be’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbheSXvFFjg&feature=youtu.be’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTo9wGLFtAs&feature=youtu.be’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HY8G50Zkvv8&feature=youtu.be’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJyyG1lH2DI&feature=youtu.be’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iLZrEighok&feature=youtu.be’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lL_6hkLSRA&feature=youtu.be’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iFcbQvT5FA&feature=youtu.be’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMkVzL3udCw&feature=youtu.be’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHfU7HR1Pk4&feature=youtu.be’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWTZeKtaFKQ&feature=youtu.be’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIfpAWT1JiI&feature=youtu.be’] [yframe...

PR vs Norkam @ Robert Bateman

on Jan 9, 2015 in Panorama Ridge Thunder

2nd tourney for the season takes us East to Robert Bateman Secondary in Abbotsford for a tough Juniors tournament. Friday night special against Norkam from Kamloops. The team battled down the stretch with a big three to go up one but a late foul put them at the free throw line with 1 out of 2 free throws converted to get to overtime. With 7 seconds left Norkam commits a turnover that allowed the Thunder guard for late game coast to coast winner only to get blocked by Norkam’s big, ball game! Heartbreaker that put them into the losing pool. Way to take that Grade10 team to overtime! You will learn from it. PR vs Vancouver College

on Jan 8, 2015 in Basketball, Panorama Ridge Thunder

First game of the year and the rust definitely was a factor 🙂 Great opportunity to play against a renowned program. Congrats to the Thunder for pulling out a 64-49 victory. Takeaways: better job at rebounding the team didn’t foul as much, instead they got to the charity stripe early in the quarters and got easy buckets from foul shots the penetration and dish game was on point nice to see the “pinch-post” sets being ran, it was effective on three straight plays … an open shot, a fake handoff and a pick and roll could have had a 4-point play but did not convert the free throw i found the VC guards to get their shots off more easier, our guards tend to work a bit harder to get a decent shot. Need to find a more efficient way in getting easy buckets They need to speed up their transition offense and look for the ‘rim run’ [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtHDFlFMxB0′] They’re not pressing to anticipate and truly cause a turnover, they’re pressing to just slow the offense down. They need to realize that a stronger pressure with more intense anticipation will get those easy steals. Guards need to force to one side and the rest overplays. they are undisciplined in close outs to shooters and fall for the shot fake …. a lot. You’re always taught to shuffle on closeouts so that you can adjust horizontally with good balance as opposed to leaving your feet this team reminds me of this car …………it’s beautiful, it looks aggressive, it looks like a beast, it looks mean but just like it’s paint job …. it’s got ‘No Finish!‘. They need more fundamental drills around finishing at the hoop, I see it all across positions that they tend to bail out on their shots and not focus on finishing strong and expecting the contact. Simple shot fakes, up and under’s, step backs, fade-aways etc.  Enjoy the game highlights! [yframe...

PR vs 204 Selects – Xmas 2014 Edition

on Jan 1, 2015 in Fall Ball, Panorama Ridge Thunder

Last exhibition run for the 2014 season with a playdate setup between 204 Customs Selects, Panorama Ridge and Killarney. Takeaways: not feeling pretty happy about rolled ankles on a few PR players, hopefully those kids can recover quick enough for their school seasons 204 had too many unforced errors seeing guys getting an offensive board on a free-throw is great for the offensive team but not acceptable for the defensive side ‘penetrate and dish’ works, you just have to know when to use it …….. i.e. when the defense gets sucked in and a teammate rotates for a passing angle close game overall, came down to free-throws with 2 clutch free throws from PR to seal the deal PR put on a good press that managed to draw a few turnovers The end result, Killarney 2-0, Pano 1-1, 204 0-2 …….. good turnout with players and guests so the gym was rockin! ‘hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard’ [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZ6SN6NHcGo’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wUqGoQON8Q’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WI-g6SiH0_0′] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MWxmu9WT7Y’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8B2VmP7Tpk’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkZ9_kV6RIg’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpfmelhKtPE’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDPRWj4uH2s’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MeeeIwiUks’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1FWxZJOE-g’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-yizf1Y9f4′]...

PR vs Surrey Christian

on Dec 18, 2014 in Panorama Ridge Thunder

Another district win for the Junior Thunder team, 75 – 47. Takeaways: This is a game of runs, the boys go up by a lot, then off the pedal, then on the pedal. They gotta have the consistency to their approach. The videos will show you the run they made and how the team recovered Their full court press is easy to beat, if playing a 1-2-2 full court press, you need to have your last two anticipate the passing lanes, overplay once the guards have decided on which side to force I saw one kid break the PR press from coast to coast going through 4 guys, not acceptable …. always stop the guy with the ball! Still a lot of outside threes I’ve noticed, they look like the Houston Rockets out there. If they want to do that, there’s gotta be more penetration and dish to players moving without the ball around the arc Lazy defense, we rely too much on the around-the-back steal as opposed to facing the opponent head on and using our feet to beat them to the spot they want to go The rebounding does not create a ‘dome’ like space around the basket. The boys constantly get sucked in either forced to take it out of bounds because they scored a basket and there’s no rebound or players end up tapping the ball out which usually ends up on the opponents had for a put back. Body first before the ball! We gotta bang guys when they try to enter the key and get low, start driving those legs to push rebounders out of the key Focus on finishing strong in the paint at the peak of vertical. I see guys altering their shot and sort of bailing out and avoiding contact [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpIXQhmSTrs’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VESBoCZjxOo’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0K6DpIgvg4′] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8MeG_z36Bg’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FstGt1g24oI’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9y_PKJlPiM’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cSIwEZLGjc’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umVTGAuGy78′] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmBuHArt9G4′] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZW7t__ARtv0′] [yframe...

PR vs Pacific Academy

on Dec 17, 2014 in Panorama Ridge Thunder

The season opener didn’t prove to be much of a challenge with a 49-13 victory. PR put on the full court man to man and went on a 33-0 run to start the game. At that point most of the starters were done for the night while 2nd and 3rd lines got a chance to get a little more on the court. Takeaways: Better motion on offense saw more penetration and dish I still thought, way too many turnovers on PRs part for a blowout game …… too many travelling errors The team didn’t score as much in the second half. They should continue to focus on scoring to constantly widen the gap for points differential when it comes to seeding in the spring time for Fraser Valley playoffs Check out the boxscores and highlights! 3rd place finish at the 2K14 St. George’s Domino’s Tournament

on Dec 7, 2014 in Panorama Ridge Thunder

First tournament of the year presents good competition right off the bat for the Grade 9 Thunder squad.  Here are some of the takeaways from this weekend’s tournament: Takeaways: Scoring buckets is not an issue for this team They live and die by the outside shots, not enough points in the paint considering their size …… they rely too much on the long range shots. Perhaps they don’t want the contact who knows. They had their way in the paint against Richmond High but not the case against St. George’s their shooters have good strokes so there will be some nights where shooting will be good and some nights where it will be bad ….. they gotta learn to be more multi-dimensional as a team and find ways to score more in the paint (i.e. post ups), in transition (fast breaks), from inbound plays and overall hustle plays they lack the defensive intensity that their opponents have, Holy Cross and St. George’s to name a few given the height advantage they get out rebounded on a regular basis play zone defense on this team and you will have a chance saw kids hustle with ‘first-to-the-floor’ mentality, those 50-50 balls can make the difference in close games ‘no middle’ = ‘yes middle’ … paying too much attention to the ball as oppose to cutting players in the paint no ball movement in their zone offense, no cutters …. no screen predictable passing not enough anticipation on their press-break, and once beaten others don’t help to stop the guy with the ball study your opponent …… if you know he likes to spot up for three in the left wing, make sure you defend him on the next one not after he knocks down 4 against your team. I think they should have went man-to-man on Saints and force our bigs to play defense in the paint on dribble drives change of possession transition fast-break is slow to progress …. they have the speed on the front line to advance the ball but they prefer to walk it up across half court …. they need to put that pressure on the defense on easy fast break opportunities guards that have good hesitation dribbles that shake the defender but kills dribble and forced to pass, that blow-by has to be complete with an attempt to either finish at the hoop or a pull up opportunity lack of communication on the court is evident …. players need to be always chatting with each other lack of rebounding and defense might get you by in your district but will be exploited when you get to Fraser Valley’s 2 and 1 record with wins against MEI Eagles and Richmond High is a great start to the season, they just gotta keep working in the lab and learn each others tendencies to get that chemistry better. Check out the boxscores here and highlights! vs Saints [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNII7LTulMI’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-xLlOewNcE&feature=youtu.be’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7j-U9JpepA&feature=youtu.be’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNzqSlKb1Zs&feature=youtu.be’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdRBnjtaYAY&feature=youtu.be’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6yLnaD4d7Q&feature=youtu.be’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbbYExLi5Sk’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oV8Ob4_bAPE’] vs Richmond High [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYJsDn5JS_M’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WX0p4hpjumo’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sx75wQGp6FY’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqsfetaH9Vo’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzY8bxa2hlI’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xe1RuLzSTEQ’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SW4XIWl9-t8′] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGrU3QKfmhs’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GshtSGUMLmA’] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgMLPTVu6p0′] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXQhsHtiAN0′] [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kteUwIGL-g’] [yframe...

Men’s Basketball – The 2014 Finals

on Nov 23, 2014 in Men's Basketball

Game#1: 3rd Place Final – Silver vs Red   Silver continued to play short handed to end their season and it cost them once again. Silver came short with a last minute 3ball to win and this year just didn’t have enough to get over the late heroics from Red. Silver finishes the league with back to back losses while Red bounces back from the semis game vs Purple.   Takeaways:   Red’s leading scorer in Chris Asuncion was forced to be a cheerleader due to a hamstring injury Joshua’s line, 7 for 15 scoring 15 pts TJ”s line, 4 for 14 scoring 12 pts Matthew’s line, 8 for 18 scoring 18 pts TJ and Rondon with 11 steals combined Best game for Andrew with 8 pts Christian did his usual damage, 10 for 14 scoring 21 pts Brad and Daniel with 16 and 17 Red out-rebounds Silver 44 – 35 Silver with 7 more turnovers Big congrats to Christian Apanay for ‘cleaning house’ with multiple awards …. League Leading Scorer and MVP! Check out the boxscores and highlights! [vimeo clip_id=112025546]   Game#2: 1st Place Final – Black vs Purple ‘The Main Event’   The main event did not disappoint. Black thought they had the game in the bag but with a late barrage of 3point buckets from Purple it seemed like the comeback was going to be complete. Black had other plans with continuous attack to the hoop and excellent rebounding for easy transition scores.   Takeaways:   Ian Alcoreza went 7 for 20 ending with 17 pts No one else scored more than 6 pts for Purple team, didn’t get enough production from the rest as most of their pts came in the second half No Starvin for points with Ryan’s stat line, 11 for 22 scoring 27 pts Lou hit a three! Charles put in 11 pts and a monstrous night on the boards with 19 total rebounds Kit solid with his 14 pts Allan and Charles’ Block party with combined 5 blocks Purple team had a tough shooting night with 17 for 71 Check out the boxscores and highlights! [vimeo clip_id=112668627]   Just wanna give a big shoutouts to my family for always supporting this passion and I truly couldn’t make this league work without them. 204 Customs Men’s Basketball – 2014 Fall Week7

on Nov 9, 2014 in Men's Basketball

Game1: Purple Advances to the Finals! Purple team’s deep roster was the difference this game plus the guard play from their young bloods. Red tried to catch up but a little too late. Takeaways: Christian Amurao saved his best game of the season with 4 for 5 shooting ending with 10pts Red’s top guns in TJ and Chris Ascunsion had a rough outing TJ 1 for 8 Chris 4 for 20 Matthew and Rondon did their usual disruption of defence and boards Patrick went 2 for 3 from long distance Outside shooting from Ervin and Christian A did a lot of damage. Let me guess Bal is going to show up for the Finals! 🙂 Check out the boxscores and highlights! [vimeo clip_id=111328993 ]   Game2: No repeat for the Silver team in 2014. With a depleted roster losing their two bigs they had a big task ahead of them to advance. They had the momentum going into the second half with Christian Apanay’s buzzer beater to put them up 6 but Black put on the pressure to go on a run of their own. Better outlet and fastbreak for the Black team and I think that was the difference. Takeaways: Black with 16 steals and 6 blocks, good defensive effort Silver with 20 turnovers Held Rio scoreless Brad with 19, Christian with 18 Black team with 13 assists to Silver’s 4 ……. big shift from previous games Ryan D, Mark S, Prab and Rick B’s presence was definitely missed! 204 Select U15 Fall vs Princess Margaret Secondary

on Oct 28, 2014 in Fall Ball

First high school contest for the year against our neighbours from Princess Margaret. They had size on paper but the squad managed to exploit their weakness which was their poor care of the ball. Takeaways: 47 – 31 victory Rattled start but by middle of first half we were in control We out-rebounded them 33-27 We had 18 steals to their 4 We had 7 turnovers to their 20 they fouled twice as much play execution was much improved on the man to man offensive sets, also saw better ball movement on the zone our bigs crashed the boards, but we gotta keep off those loose ball fouls and try to get better positioning instead saw some good post moves with thought-through moves, aka not rushed! Dreamhoops 2K14 Fall League Week5 – vs Huskies

on Oct 23, 2014 in Fall Ball

Pretty close game all through out but the team managed to pull out a win on a couple of key plays at the end. Highlights: our young bloods took 20 of the 39 shots, great sign of aggressiveness and confidence (for Ethan and Shan) missing key free throws at the end was crucial but having cushion helped preserve the lead and ultimately the win Cameron had a bad game but provided 3 key steals in the last two minutes of the game Justin goes for 100% shooting in the field! Switching to 2-3 zone in the last 18 secs of the game from man-to-man the whole game really threw off the opposing team Click here to check out the box scores and shot chart! See you guys this Saturday where we play the UNC Tar Heels at 4pm.

204 Customs Men’s Basketball – 2014 Fall Week6

on Oct 9, 2014 in Men's Basketball

Game1: “Silver is the new Black”   I swear to God I thought I was looking at my Grade9 team’s shot chart. Black continues to struggle in the points department with now a 2-game losing streak. A lot of missed lay-ups in the paint would have kept the game close but we gotta figure out a way to move that ball more often. It got physical early and it sustained because the game ended with 27 fouls total between the two teams. For a while I thought Daniel was playing a baseball game cuz he sure looked like he was playing a perfect game. Imagine going 5 for 5 in 2pt range, 1 for 1 in 3pt range, 4 for 6 on the free-throw line, 4 rebs, 3 helpers and 1 steal ………… WOW, impeccable efficiency! Daniel, whatever you had prior to that game, please do the exact opposite before the semis, Black don’t need a stat line like that again. Brad could have been playing for In-N-Out Burgers with his version of a double-double, he served up 24 pts and 17 rebs! Quiet night for Christian (good to see him take a 3pt shot),  The Bal Brothers were like Windex, great for cleaning the glass … with 17 boards together. No wonder they walked away with the 69-54 victory. Click here for the box scores and shot chart   Takeaways: Jeff and Louie for the Black team held scoreless Allan fouled as much as he scored, I commend his courage in battling down in the low block. I know it’s hard buddy! Charles 0 for 12 in 2pt range, unheard of! Ryan and Charles combined for 48 shots! Brad and Daniel led the attack and the role players stepped up Rick had 2nd most shot attempt for Silver with 11 (Brad with 16) and continues to fall in love with that corner 3ball Mark S scores 7 off the bench Rio is off this game enjoying his Tea’s and Crumpets   Game2: Ian the “Iceman” makes his debut   Team Purple is on a 3 game winning streak! Ian’s breakout party was quite the performance. Regulation time was not enough to settle the score and this game came down to heart and effort. Lot’s of ups and downs and I’ll bet that was more entertainment than your Raptors and Kings pre-season game from Sunday. The difference to Ian’s game that night was that he never settled for the 3. He could have been called the Ginsu knife, because of his ability to cut through the defense and score And1 after And1’s. He went 7 for 12 inside the arc and 9 for 12 on the free-throw line, sounds like a Karl Malone stat line. Alejandro also did some damage with 19 of his own, 6 for 8 in 2pt range and 2 for 4 outside the arc. It reminded me of the Twilight Movie series … young vampires out for blood! Ian, Alejandro and Jas killed it with 50 of the team’s 64 pts. Joshua started the game off hot and ended up with 11 pts on 5 for 5 inside the arc and big 3pt shot in the second half. MVP for the Red team was Matthew hands down. He brought the rebounding energy at key moments in the game none bigger than the offensive putback to send the game into OT. Chris Ascuncion took that final shot early in the shot clock with about 5-seconds left in overtime. I think they could have gotten a better shot than a fading-left distance 3 but he vowed that he would come back with a vengeance. I can’t wait for the rematch during the semis! Click here for the box scores and shot chart   Takeaways: Jeff fouls out early and forced to watch the game with 6 mins left, ow my bad add another 3 mins on top of that because of overtime I realized that James and Dexter would rather dance than be in the game 🙂 Pretty impressive display of moves gentlemen If I told you Gil only scored 2 pts would you believe me they still won the game? 2 big free throws that is! TJ’s only score was a comeback 3pt shot late in the game, not enough to get the team over the hump Rondon must have numerous burglary records because he added 5 steals to his defensive reputation Good to see Iggy back! Dreamhoops 2K14 Fall League Week3 – vs Spartans

on Oct 6, 2014 in Fall Ball

Good to see us get more buckets in the paint in this game because there wasn’t a whole lot of pressure from the top. Takeaways: our 3pt shooting continues to be a work in progress, but good to see guys not hesitating on those shots shorter, less aggressive team manages to out-rebound us by one we shot almost twice as much they did in 2pt range, and we hit almost 50% of them they shot 8 more threes with 23 attempts Click here for box scores and shot charts! See you guys on Thursday!

204 Customs Men’s Basketball – 2014 Fall Week5

on Oct 1, 2014 in Men's Basketball

Game1: Black vs Purple – “Purple Rain”   It’s rainy season! Purple’s 45% shooting from 3pt range did the Black team in, not to mention running with only six players. With Allan, Marwin, Ramil and Dean out of the lineup Gil and James decided to have their breakout game with 3 and 4 3pointers respectively. Alejandro bounces back with 17 of his own. The main difference in this game came down to long-distance shooting, with Black team resorting to zone-defense, they refuse to recognize the streak shooting of the Purple team and failed to close out early to those shooters. Also noticing the ball sticking in Black’s offense with less ball movement, it kills me not being out there with the troops. This game is all about adjustments so we’ll see come playoffs how both teams adjust. Great job Purple team for handing Black team their first loss! It was either Purple Rain or Make It Rain ….. I didn’t think the latter was appropriate, I would think that’s more for their celebration if they win the championship. Stay tuned. Notables: Mike (18), Kit (14) and Ryan (11) as the usual suspects for the Black team Alejandro (17), Gil (15) and James (12) made it rain late in September Jeff U almost gets a double-double with 8 pts and 10 rebs Jas and Bal with their efficient 60% shooting in the field (Jas we gotta work on those air balls bruh!) Click here for boxscores and shotcharts!   Game2: Silver vs Red – “The Hunt for Red October”   The Red team is hawngry! With the streak they’re in since the return of Chris Ascuncion in the lineup, October could be the month where they gain momentum into the playoffs. What does that tell you when Rondon scores only one point the whole game but still manage to pull out a victory against the defending champs? …… That’s called teamwork! Everybody hit the box scores, including Carlo …… officially the team’s new Cheerleader and Mascot! Way to get the crowd hyped! Silver continues to struggle with 19 turnovers and contributing to 20 steals by the Red team, they were lucky to extend it to overtime but just wasn’t enough and perhaps unprepared for the constant full-court press the tireless Red team unleashed on them. Notables: Chris A with 23 pts Mathew with 11 pts Patrick snaked around the paint with 10 But TJ, damn! .750 shooting percentage going 3  for 3 inside the arc and 3 for 5 outside Rondon alone got 9 steals Rick L getting into double digits with 10 Brad with hard-earned 20 Christian “the softest-hand in the business” Apanay with 16 Click here for boxscores and shotcharts! Dreamhoops 2K14 Fall League Week2 – vs Hoyas

on Sep 28, 2014 in Fall Ball

Tougher Week2 that’s for sure! Takeaways: 4 for 6 on the free throw line is an improvement they shot 50% compared to our 25% we were outrebounded, 30 to 20 our 18 turnovers to their 5 their 11 steals to our 6 we had a slow start but managed to climb back when we started to handle the zone pressure and started attacking the zone eliminated our post plays that we had prepared for all week I will address this type of zone pressure defense on Thursday night’s practice. We have to attack right in the middle by the free throw line and penetrate for a dump off to our bigs their pressure threw us off early and we had a mountain to climb early Click here for the box scores and shot chart! Please bring your 204 jersey sets to practice just in case we get everybody at the same time for team pictures, thanks and have a great week! Schedule...

204 Customs Men’s Basketball – 2014 Fall Week4

on Sep 26, 2014 in Men's Basketball

Game1: Black vs Red – “no Dean, no problem” Black goes on an early run causing the red team to call an early timeout. Red then goes on a run of their own and almost evens things up at half, 30-29. Good all around play for both teams for the first half. Red team managed to stay close with their ball movement on the zone defense but then the ‘Kit’ factor kicked in … with his savvy drives to the hoop, the clever guard went 5 for 7 on the charity stripe. The trio of Chris Ascuncion (19), Rondon(12) and Carlo(9) did most of the damage with Matthew(8) not far behind.  The black team had a balanced attack with Ryan(13), Kit(12), Marwin and Allan (9each), and Charles(8). Injury news: Ramil will be out for the season due to a severe right-ankle sprain that will leave him cheering on the sidelines for the next few months …. ouch it hurts to write that! Click here for box scores!   Game2: Purple vs Silver – “Mr. Consistency” Another classic showdown with physicality written all over it. I don’t know what it is with this purple team with playing close games in the end. I’m thinking this is going to be a dangerous team in the playoffs. Their record may now show it but they could beat you with that deep roster. Alejandro had an off night but his teammates stepped up namely Ervin(10), Bal(9), Jeff(8). This is supposed to be a shooter’s dream team but the long range bombs are being contested and passes are not making its way around the horn efficiently and this is why we’re not seeing more 3pt success. The defending champs are finding out the hard way how difficult it is to defend a championship. With their hard-nosed shooting guard, Ryan D, possibly out for the rest of the season according to league sources, the silver team will need to step up the D and start climbing back up the rankings. With Brad and Christian in double-digits, a depleted front-court … they’re gonna need a lot more help from that formidable front court. They have great consistency in Christian(19) and Brad(11) but need more production from the rest of the team. But this team will figure it out so don’t count them out. Click here for box scores!   League Standings after Week4               Not gonna lie, first round of the playoffs will be wide open because any team can pull off an upset on any given day. See you all on Week5!   League Schedule...

Dreamhoops 2K14 Fall League Week1 – vs UNC

on Sep 21, 2014 in Fall Ball

Great start to the Fall season with a close game that we failed to close out. Takeaways: No hesitation on our shots Our advancement of the ball was good Man to man defense was good Our transition defense was mediocre, they got a lot of easy buckets We lacked in finding bodies for boxing out Our pick and roll defense needs to be tightened up 0 for 8 on the free throw line will only result in a loss Butterfinger syndrome with receiving passes Week1 Stats – please click here Sportsmanship I would also like to talk about sportsmanship and the spirit of competition. Dreamhoops contacted me yesterday about a few parents that allegedly confronted the organizer about “making noises during free throws“.  We huddled in our post-game meeting and the team didn’t feel that this was an issue and there were no beefs about the calls being made. This was strictly a parents issue. There are absolutely no rules against making noises during free throws. I’m sure most of you have attended live NBA games and distractions during free throws is an important part of the game. We cannot control what other teams and fans do, we can only focus on what we do. I wish those parents would have approached me first and I could have helped address the issue. You are not only representing 204 Customs Basketball, you are representing your boys, your families. We felt the game last night was clean and calls were evenly made. These in-game activities, combined with physical play and hostile environment should be nothing new now in highly competitive Grade 9 Basketball. We want to remind you though that future games will be 10x more intense than that game yesterday. I have now been given a warning for two of our parents and the next time this happens, they will be ejected (which has happened in the past to us) and banned from the games. We want to continue to keep the focus on the kids’ progress on the court and these distractions add another layer of complexity in managing a team. The last thing we want is for our parents to miss supporting their young adults. This is not just an issue for the Dreamhoops league, this will happen in other leagues and exhibition games as well.  If parents still feel strongly about this point, we fully respect that and would like to provide the following option. The boys are welcome to join our practice and training sessions but will not be eligible to play in any games. Unfortunately, we cannot refund the Dreamhoops registration as that is now paid for, the jerseys are yours to keep. The 2014 Fall 204 jerseys will still be completed and yours to keep We are adding an addendum to the 204 waiver forms to address this type of issue and will give you an option to opt out of the games or continue on with the full program. We believe in play-fair competition and we don’t condone any unsportsmanlike conduct whether it’s done to us or our players/parents behaving on and off the court. That responsibility is on me as a coach and I will do my best to address referees/organizers if I feel there is a need. I don’t think this would have happened if the outcome of the game was different and that doesn’t teach the boys anything about a graceful loss. This game is not only about physical strength, more importantly I think is the mental toughness and if you don’t feel that this is something you don’t want your sons’ to be a part of then we fully respect that decision. Let’s look forward to week 2 and stay together! #teamworkmakesthedreamwork Now on a lighter note, checkout some of these online vids [yframe url=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vSb1o0Inag’]   BC Senior Boys Basketball Environment – http://sportscanada.tv/index.php/basketball/hs-bb/bc-hs-basketball/senior-boys/316...

204 Customs Men’s Basketball – 2014 Fall Week3

on Sep 17, 2014 in Men's Basketball

Game 1: Red vs Purple – “the Comeback” With a 34-12 lead at half time you would think the Red team would be doing the ‘Shmoney’ dance en route to a win. But hold up, here comes Bal (5 for 11), Ervin (5 for 10) and Jass (5 for 8)! The comeback  would have been complete but Chris Ascunsion had other plans. Returning from his Mexican vacation, he brought out the Aztec in him with a padded stat line of 22pts, 6 rebs, 3 steals and a block, not to mention 3 for 4 behind the arc. Good to see TJ back with 16 of his own and help close this one out with the team! Click here for game stats! Game 2: Black vs Silver – “no love for Dean” Black and Silver usually means Raider nation but this game was like a Football injury stat line. Marwin’s knee and Ryan’s heel could be costly for both teams. We wish them well and a healthy recovery. Black focused on Brad (2 for 18) because it was obvious nobody could stop Christian (55%). The black attack consisted of Charles (18pts), Kit (16pts) and Ryan (13pts). Jeff with a breakout game of 8 pts made up for a scoreless Mike and Marwin. Dean was clearly fouled and should have been on the free-throw line, that would have at least drawn some cheers from the crowd. The trio of Christian (23pts), Brad (13pts, 9 of 11 at the line) and Rio (12pts) was not enough to get the win. I’m sure game #2 of this series will be primetime just before the playoffs! I’m proud of what these kids have accomplished together in the short six-weeks …. 5th place out of 12 teams is a good place to start with the top U12/U13 club players in VanCity. They competed on every possession and truly know what teamwork means, early and forever. Apparently they also know how to ‘Twerk’ ….....

2011 Zoom Hyperdunk Lows Review

on Apr 7, 2012 in Basketball, Kicks

Green Abyss was the word that caught my attention with these kicks not to mention the reputation that comes along with the Hyperdunk lineup. Fit – true to size, picked up 9.5s with Eastbay’s recommended half size but I found it to be true to size. Grip – excellent! Comfort – the Zoom says it all Support – depending on your game, this shoe provides the quickness and agility that a 1 or 2 needs. Looks – I like it, that’s all that matters Technology – Big fan of the flywire technology so lightweight is a bonus Price – I think it’s reasonable, only if I could buy more 🙁 PROS: colorway selection, price, look and feel CONS: support   [nggallery...

on Aug 24, 2010 in 204 Projects, Basketball, Designs, Kicks, Performance, Sublimation, Warm Ups

I picked up my HyperFuse kicks from the folks over at The Word sneaker shop in Bellingham and was immediately inspired by the colorway so I decided to match it up from top to bottom. Oh by the way, I can’t argue with the the reviews either.
